Samia blesses major road projects in Tanga

TANGA: PRESIDENT Samia Suluhu Hassan has announced that the government will open a tender on March 6 to find a contractor for the construction of a 22-kilometer paved road connecting Soni to Bumbuli-Korogwe in Tanga Region.

The project will also include an additional 9.3 kilometers from Meta to Kwashemsi in the Tanga region, which is expected to enhance the region’s economic development.

The President made these remarks while addressing residents of Lushoto District on the second day of her five-day visit to Tanga.

She also highlighted that the government is continuing with the construction of the Bagamoyo-Tanga road. Tomorrow, she plans to lay the foundation stone for the Pangani Bridge and its associated road infrastructure.

 “We are opening up Tanga by linking it to Zanzibar and Pemba through maritime transport. This will help Pemba, which relies heavily on goods from Tanga, and will ultimately boost Tanga’s economy,” President Samia stated.

Furthermore, the President also instructed the Minister of Tourism to review the compensation guidelines for farmers, whose crops are damaged by wildlife, ensuring they receive proper compensation.

“I want the Minister to explore the possibility of revising the compensation regulations for farmers whose crops are destroyed by animals, ensuring that the compensation is fair and adequately compensates for their losses,” she added.

Additionally, President Samia encouraged staff at the Bumbuli District Council to make use of the newly launched building to provide services to the public, while also emphasizing the need to maintain the structure.

She commended the residents of Lushoto for their clean environment, noting the noticeable difference in air quality.

The Minister for Lands, Housing, and Human Settlements Development, Deogratius Ndejembi, who spoke on behalf of the Minister of State in the President’s Office – Regional Administration and Local Government, Mohamed Mchengerwa, shared that the government has allocated over 21bn/- to Lushoto District Council to address the issue of long distances that students must travel to school.

This funding used to build new secondary schools, alongside the construction of six new primary schools.

Furthermore, he said the government has allocated more than 5bn/- for the construction and completion of over 17 health centers, including four new health centers between 2021 and 2024 in the district.

“Overall, the government has allocated over 32bn/- to this district for education, health, and other infrastructure projects. This is a significant investment,” he said.

Tanga Regional Commissioner, Ambassador Dr Batilda Burian, also expressed her gratitude to President Samia Suluhu Hassan for continuing to allocate funds for various development projects, including 24bn/- for the construction of municipal and district council buildings.
