VP urges Tanzania, Korea to broaden economic cooperation

DODOMA: VICE President Dr Philip Mpango has called for deeper economic cooperation between Tanzania and South Korea, urging increased trade and investment that will benefit both nations.

During a meeting with the South Korean Ambassador to Tanzania Ms Eunju Ahn at Chamwino State House in Dodoma, Dr Mpango emphasized the need for South Korean investors and business leaders to explore opportunities in Tanzania, particularly in manufacturing and industrial development.

He noted that processing raw materials locally would not only boost trade but also drive technology transfer and create more jobs for Tanzanians.

Dr Mpango reaffirmed Tanzania’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with South Korea, a relationship that dates back to 1992 and has supported development in key sectors such as education, infrastructure, ICT, health, agriculture, industry, and energy.

He also commended South Korea for its continued support, highlighting the importance of the recently signed agreement on strategic minerals.

He pointed out that Tanzania’s rich mineral resources align with the global shift towards green technology and sustainable economic growth.

On labour relations, Dr Mpango expressed Tanzania’s willingness to collaborate with South Korea in job placement programmes.

He urged Ambassador Ahn to facilitate Tanzania’s inclusion in the Employment Permit System (EPS) that allows Tanzanian workers to access job opportunities in South Korea like shipbuilding, manufacturing, and modern agriculture sectors.

He also stressed the importance of strengthening cooperation in education, particularly in training healthcare professionals to specialize in advanced medical fields.

Beyond trade and labour, Dr Mpango emphasized the need for cultural and linguistic exchange, calling for enhanced collaboration in sports and the promotion of the Kiswahili language in South Korea.

The Vice President reaffirmed Tanzania’s readiness to expand bilateral ties and deepen cooperation in areas that will drive economic growth and development for both countries.
