Fresh move to boost horticulture exports

DAR ES SALAAM: THE Tanzania Horticultural Association (TAHA) has taken a major step in enhancing Tanzania’s horticultural export industry by opening a new office in the UK.

The new development was made public at the just ended TAHA’s 18th Annual General Meeting held in Arusha, recently.

This expansion is part of the Horticultural Exports Accelerator Programme (HEAP), a strategic initiative aimed at increasing Tanzania’s visibility and access to international markets, particularly in Europe.

The UK office, located within the Tanzanian High Commission in London, will serve as a hub for connecting Tanzanian farmers with global buyers.

The Association’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr Jacqueline Mkindi, highlighted the importance of this move in broadening market opportunities for Tanzanian fruits, vegetables and spices.

“The office will also provide logistical support to exporters, helping them navigate challenges such as supply chain disruptions and trade barriers,” she said.

A seasoned business specialist, Mr Maarten Boeye will lead efforts to expand market reach not only in the UK but also in Belgium, the Netherlands, India and the Gulf region.

The HEAP initiative, backed by the UK government and strategic partners like Palladium Impact, aims to elevate Tanzania’s horticultural exports to the global stage.

The programme is working toward a 2-billion US Dollar export target by 2030, supporting Tanzanian producers through training and partnerships to meet international market standards.

TAHA also led the Tanzania business delegation to showcase their produce at the European Fruit Logistica 2025 trade fair in Berlin, offering an opportunity for Tanzanian exporters to explore new markets in Asia, Europe and beyond.

The move signals Tanzania’s growing commitment to diversifying its horticultural export markets and addressing logistics challenges, positioning the country for continued growth in the global agricultural export sector.
