Tanzanian university students wins EU debate contest

DAR ES SALAAM – Three Tanzanian university students have triumphed in the European Union (EU) Youth Debate Contest, earning a fully sponsored trip to Poland, courtesy of the Polish Embassy in Tanzania.
Careen Ndika from the University of Dar es Salaam was named the overall best speaker, with Diana Shabani from Dar es Salaam Tumaini University and Kijafaraja Maduhu from the University of Dar es Salaam securing runner-up positions. The three will travel to Poland later this year for an educational and cultural study visit.
Reflecting on her victory, Ndika said, “This contest has shown us the power of structured debate and well-articulated ideas. I am honored to be among the winners and look forward to the journey ahead.”
The live debate, held on January 30-31, 2025, at the University of Dar es Salaam Library Auditorium, featured 20 finalists discussing the motion: “Having your own business guarantees a more sustainable income than a regular job.” The winning team, which opposed the motion, included Ndika, Maduhu, Erick Kaja, Mary Kibira, and Timothy Jeremiah.
Dr. Baruani Mshale, Director of Learning and Planning at Twaweza and Chief Judge of the contest, praised the participants for their strong arguments and historical insight. “This debate shattered the myth that Tanzanians cannot communicate effectively. The students skillfully connected history with present challenges, showcasing critical thinking vital for shaping the future,” he said.

The EU Youth Debate Contest, launched on November 18, 2024, is part of the EU’s effort to engage young Tanzanians in socio-economic discussions. The competition saw over 400 applicants, with 100 advancing to the Social Media Debate Challenge and 20 finalists reaching the live debate rounds.
EU Ambassador to Tanzania H.E. Christine Grau highlighted the importance of fostering critical thinking among young people. “We are impressed by their talent and fresh ideas. We hope to make this an annual event, reaching more students and promoting a culture of debate in Tanzania,” she said.
The Polish Embassy, a key partner in the initiative, expressed its commitment to youth development. Acting Polish Ambassador to Tanzania, Katarzyna Sobiecka, stated, “We are delighted to offer the winners an enriching trip to Poland this summer.”
The EU Youth Debate Contest is set to become an annual event, equipping Tanzanian students with valuable skills in public speaking, critical thinking, and leadership.
