SAA relaunches route to Dar es Salaam

DAR ES SALAAM: South African Airways (SAA) has announced the relaunch of its daily flight service between Johannesburg and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, strengthening ties between two of Africa’s most prominent economies.
The route, which commence the operations, is part of SAA’s strategic initiative to expand its regional footprint, according to the airline’s interim CEO, Professor John Lamola.
“This flight is more than just a milestone for SAA; it symbolizes a bridge that connects two influential economies while fostering collaboration, trade, and investment,” Lamola said. He highlighted the economic benefits for both countries, including enhanced access to industries, resources, and tourism opportunities.
Economic and Strategic Importance
Dar es Salaam, East Africa’s largest city, serves as a regional economic hub and a gateway to major tourist attractions. South Africa remains a key investor in Tanzania, with strong trade in sectors such as agriculture, precious metals, machinery, and chemicals.
The relaunch aligns with SAA’s broader vision of enhancing connectivity across Africa. Lamola noted that regional flights are crucial for the airline’s financial performance and South Africa’s overall economic growth.

Flight Schedule
The daily flights will depart Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport at 10:00 PM (SAST) and land at Dar es Salaam’s Julius Nyerere International Airport at 2:30 AM (EAT).
Return flights will depart Dar es Salaam at 5:10 AM (EAT), arriving in Johannesburg at 7:55 AM (SAST). The schedule is designed to accommodate both direct passengers and those connecting to other destinations.

Expanding SAA’s Regional Network
SAA has been steadily growing its regional operations. In November 2024, the airline increased flights to Harare (Zimbabwe) and Lusaka (Zambia) and introduced services to Lubumbashi in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). It also boosted intercontinental flights to Perth, Australia, starting earlier this year.
Reservations for the Johannesburg-Dar es Salaam route are now open on SAA’s website, with tickets available for both business and leisure travelers.
