Two traffic officers in custody for unethical conduct

DAR ES SALAAM: POLICE in Dar es Salaam have arrested two traffic officers for allegedly being involved in what has been described as unethical conduct while on duty.

Dar es Salaam Special Zone Police Commander, Senior Assistant Commissioner of police (SACP) Jumanne Muliro told journalists yesterday that the two officers, a male and female were already in custody waiting for further disciplinary and legal measures against them.

The police action was prompted by the widely circulated video on social media, showing the two traffic officers receiving something from bus conductors.

Mr Muliro confirmed the arrest of the two officers, saying their actions embarrassed the Police Force.

“The two, a male and a female officer, are in custody. Serious disciplinary actions will be taken against them before any further legal procedures are pursued,” said Muliro.

He insisted that the Police Force in Dar es Salaam’s Special Zone will not tolerate actions that undermine the integrity of the Force or the government as a whole.

In the video, the two officers were filmed at unspecified area in the city stopping commuter vehicles for what appears to be a routine check.

However, the vehicles stop a few meters and conductors jump out and then hand over something to the officers.

After handing over something, they go back to the buses and proceed with their journey. The officers are not seen to bother inspecting the vehicles as expected.

Mr Muliro has assured the public that police are going on with investigations on the matter.

He said stern disciplinary measures will be taken against the officers under the court martial before proceeding with other legal procedures.

“We are continuing to take quick and stern measures against those who tarnish the image of the Police Force and the government at large, we will not tolerate such bad conduct,” said Mr Muliro.
