President Mwinyi to lead spectacular fete

ZANZIBAR: ZANZIBAR President Hussein Mwinyi and President Samia Suluhu Hassan will today lead Tanzanians in the commemoration of the 61st anniversary of Zanzibar Revolution, an important event that is scheduled to take place at Gombani Stadium in Pemba’s South Region.
Zanzibar Second VicePresident, Mr Hemed Suleiman Abdullah said yesterday that all preparations were in place and that some guests had already started arriving in the isles.
“Some of the guests are already here and we are expecting more to arrive from various areas,” he said in his briefing to press yesterday.
He added: “We have inspected the stadium, and we are satisfied with the preparations, the stage is now set as everything is in place,” said the second VP.
He added that several leaders from both the Union and Zanzibar government are expected to attend the celebrations which include military parade and other performance.
The sky in some areas of Zanzibar including Dimani, Zanzibar City in Unguja and Tibirinzi in Pemba were decorated with animated fireworks at midnight to celebrate the great Day in the history of Zanzibar.
During the month-long celebration, many development projects were launched and foundations stones laid by various leaders lead by President Samia and Dr Mwinyi.
According to the information released by the office of the second Vice President, other leaders who took part in the celebration’s activities both from Zanzibar and Union governments include the Vice President Dr Philip Mpango, Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa, Deputy Prime Minister Doto Biteko, First Vice President Othman Masoud Othman and second Vice President Hemed Suleiman Abdulla.

The one-month celebrations programme started on December 20th, 2024 and were launched by President Mwinyi by laying a foundation stones for the ongoing construction of flyover at Mwanakwerekwe area and a car parking lot at Malindi in Zanzibar City.
Meanwhile, President Mwinyi has pardoned 33 inmates including eight in Pemba from reformatory centres. Dr Mwinyi’s decision is backed by article 59 of the Zanzibar constitution of 1984.
The Zanzibar Revolution took place on January 12, 1964 by overthrowing the rule of Sultan of Zanzibar Jamshid bin Abdullah and his family.
The revolution removed the Sultan after gaining independence from Britain, signifying a step forward towards self-government for Zanzibar.
