Police arrest five cybercrime suspects

TANGA: POLICE in Tanga region have arrested five suspects in connection with engaging in cybercrime activities in various locations across the country.

Tanga Regional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Almandus Muchunguzi, named the suspects as Saidi Amiri alias Mofisamchamungu (21), Athumani Amiri (24), Brayan Mayunga alias Festo Madenge (26) and James Nathaniel all residents of Dar es Salaam.

ACP Muchunguzi said that the suspects were apprehended at various locations across the country, including Dar es Salaam, Masasi and Mtwara, for posing as agents of Tigo, Vodacom and Airtel telecommunication companies.

The suspects were able to steal 20.39m/- from Muheza-based businessman Abdul Hemed Shedafa through fraudulent methods and with the use of phone numbers registered by other individuals’ names.

He further said that the police also apprehended two people for transporting Khat in a minbus. The suspects are Hashimu Mohamed (46), a driver of the minibus and the conductor, Ramadhani Mbaruku (18). The suspects were caught at Makuyuni Village in Korogwe District, transporting 411.05 kilograms of marijuana.

Meanwhile, Tanga Regional Police Force has won cases against six people accused of rape and sodomy, marking a significant step against gender-based violence. The suspects were sentenced to life imprisonment and 30 years in prison.

The Police Commander named those sentenced to life imprisonment, as Mwamini Mgeja (32) who resides at Kilindi Asilia, He raped his 9-year-old stepchild. Jonas Alphan (38), a farmer from Gombero, Kilindi, raped a 4-year-old child while Rajabu Juma (25), a resident of Mafleta in Kilindi raped a 17-year-old child.

In addition, Richard Kyando Shelukindo alias Dudubaya (45), a resident of Kwaludege, Handeni, was sentenced to 30 years in prison for sodomising a 5-year-old child, while Mamsur Omar (19), a resident of Kwakibuyu, Pangani, raped a 16-year-old girl.

The Police Commander named the accused who were sentenced to life imprisonment, as Mwamini Mgeja (32), a Kilindi Asilia resident who raped his 9-year-old stepchild, Jonas Alphan (38), a farmer from Gombero, Kilindi who  raped a 4-year-old child; and Rajabu Juma (25), a resident of Mafleta, Kilindi who raped a 17-year-old child.

The Police Commander said that the fight against rape and sexual crimes will be intensified, while also encouraging the public to cooperate with security agencies in providing information on criminals.
