Samia reiterates education reforms
MOROGORO: PRESIDENT Samia Suluhu Hassan has reaffirmed her administration’s commitment to enhancing country’s education sector, especially through increased investment in technology, research and planning.
These measures aim to empower higher learning institutions to produce globally competitive graduates.
Speaking yesterday at the 23rd Graduation Ceremony of Mzumbe University, President Samia emphasised the need for Tanzanian graduates to excel on regional and international platforms.
“Regionally, we want our graduates to ascend as the best when they compete in the East African Community or Southern African Development Community. Even at the global level, they should stand out,” she stated.
She commended the Ministry of Education under Professor Adolf Mkenda for its efficient management of financial resources and commitment to upgrading the education system.
She further urged Mzumbe University to uphold its legacy of nurturing future leaders, who would later serve as district commissioners, regional commissioners, ministers and even presidents.
President Samia’s address followed her historic reception of a Doctorate of Leadership (Honoris Causa) from Mzumbe University.
She was the first individual to be awarded this honorary degree by the institution. In her acceptance speech, she humbly dedicated the recognition to Tanzanians and all those who have supported her leadership journey.
Highlighting her connection to Mzumbe University, President Samia recalled studying there in 1983 when it was known as the Institute of Development Management. She described her leadership journey as being shaped by her predecessors, who made significant contributions to Tanzania’s development.
Reflecting on key events that molded her leadership, she cited her role in addressing the aftermath of Zanzibar’s 2001 political dispute.
As Minister of Labour, Youth, Employment, Women and Children Development, she worked with the then-Minister Ali Mohamed Shein to restore Zanzibar’s international reputation and contribute to the formation of the Government of National Unity.
She also emphasised her role as Vice Chair of the Constituent Assembly in drafting the Proposed Constitution of 2014. In this area, she noted, deepened her skills in consensus-building and managing differing perspectives.
Perhaps the most profound moment in her career was her ascension to the presidency following the sudden death of President John Magufuli in March 2021.
“It was the most devastating event in my leadership career, yet I emerged as the first female president, committed to stabilising the nation amidst global economic shocks caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war,” she said.
President Samia outlined her leadership principles: Participatory decision-making, evidence-based strategies, and prioritising national interests. She encouraged the graduates to utilise their education to address societal challenges and contribute to Tanzania’s development.
“Leadership requires will, ethics, integrity and blessings. A good leader must consistently make the right decisions,” she stated.
She expressed optimism that Tanzania’s education system, bolstered by strategic investments, will continue to produce capable leaders. She also urged financial institutions and stakeholders to collaborate with universities to support this vision.
During the ceremony, Mzumbe University Chancellor Dr Ali Mohamed Shein praised President Samia for her dedication to national development. The university’s leadership reaffirmed its mission to uphold its founding principles by producing transformative leaders.

The institution’s achievements were further highlighted by its significant contributions to Tanzania’s governance, with many of its alumni serving in key government roles.
President Samia also commended the university for maintaining its reputation as a hub for leadership development and academic excellence.
In her concluding remarks, President Samia called on the new graduates to utilise their knowledge to drive innovation and solve real-world problems. “Your education is not just for personal success; it is a tool to uplift communities and accelerate national progress,” she said.
Her message underscored the importance of education and leadership in shaping Tanzania’s future. As the country continues to navigate global economic challenges, the role of well-prepared graduates and visionary leaders remains critical.
Meanwhile, Mzumbe University’s Chancellor, Dr Shein said the Honorary Doctorate which has been conferred to President Samia signifies her lifelong dedication to becoming a good leader.
He said he was optimistic that President Samia due to her outstanding leadership, will continue to be awarded by other universities across the world.
Also, Dr Shein thanked President Dr Samia for pledging support to construct more hostels at the Mzumbe University in Mbeya.
Moreover, she said the varsity will keep on offering leadership training to the in-services government officials by equipping them with required skills in the ever-changing global governance.
