Twiga Stars drawn with defending champions Banyana Banyana
DAR ES SALAAM: THE National Women’s Football Team, Twiga Stars, have been drawn into a tough group alongside defending champions, South Africa (Banyana Banyana) at the CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) Morocco 2024.
In the draw conducted on Friday night at the Mohammed VI Technical Centre in Sale, Morocco, Twiga Stars were placed in Group C alongside South Africa, Ghana and Mali. Tanzania is the only nation from the CECAFA region to secure a spot in the prestigious continental finals.
The 2024 edition of WAFCON, featuring 12 teams, will take place from July 5–26, 2025, in the Moroccan cities of Rabat and Casablanca.
Tanzania’s qualification marks a return to WAFCON after a 14-year absence, with their last appearance dating back to 2010. They secured their place after defeating Ivory Coast and Togo in the qualification rounds.

The draw event was attended by CAF President, Patrice Motsepe and was conducted by Samson Adamu, the Federation Director of Tournament and Events.
Other notable figures who assisted with the draw included Andile Dlamini, a key member of South Africa’s victorious 2022 WAFCON squad; Salima Mukansanga, who made history as the first female referee to officiate a men’s FIFA World Cup match during Qatar 2022; and Fatiha Laassiri, a former Moroccan international and celebrated figure in women’s football.
South Africa, the reigning champions, will be among the key teams to watch in the 13th edition of this prestigious tournament.

Group B: Nigeria, Tunisia, Algeria, Botswana
Group C: South Africa, Ghana, Mali, Tanzania.
