Tanzania golfers on course for Uganda Ladies Open tourney

ENTEBBE, UGANDA: TANZANIA Ladies Golf Union (TLGU) honorary secretary Yasmin Chali leads the other five top golfers as the Uganda Ladies Open Golf Tournament tees off at the Entebbe Golf Club in Uganda today.

Tanzania’s representatives include four national ladies’ golf team members Madina Iddi, Neema Olomi, Hawa Wanyeche and Vicky Elias who are joined by Loveness Mungure and Chali herself who plays for the bronze division.

TLGU President Queen Siraki confirmed to the ‘Daily News’ in Dar es Salaam yesterday that all Tanzanian representatives are in good shape and looking forward to today’s tee-off.

The annual 54-hole tournament brings together over 100 top African ladies’ golfers and is set to climax on Saturday.

Arusha Gymkhana Golf Club (AGC) Madina has been in good form, winning the UGC Ladies Open last week adding to the Zambia Ladies Open she won in Lusaka, Zambia in June this year.

She is looking for her first Uganda Ladies Open title after her overall second place at last year’s event at the Uganda Golf Club in Kampala, where she missed a title by a shot by a Champion host Peace Kabasweka.

However, Madina has already defeated Peace twice this year at the Zambia Ladies Open and UGC Ladies Open, both Ugandans finished second.

“It is one of those titles that I have been trying for years without success, last year I lost it by a shot and I set my target to continue where I left last year,” she said.

Neema also from AGC will be looking for her second Uganda Ladies title.

She went to Uganda fresh from conquering the Kenyan Ladies Coast Open Series in Mombasa, Kenya early this month.

Neema aggregated 229 (80,74,75) over three rounds to win her first major title at the Lake Victoria Serena Resort & Spa, Uganda in 2018.

From Tanzania People’s Defence Forces (TPDF) Lugalo Golf Club of Dar es Salaam, Vicky, who secured her first major title at the Tanzania Ladies Open Championship at Kili Golf Club in Arusha last year, will hope to continue her brilliance.

Hawa has been quiet for some time, but her decision to step down from her role as the TLGU competition secretary so that she can devote her precious time at practice to regain her firepower adds spice to Uganda’s showdown with Tanzania’s chance to bring home the title again.

Apart from Neema in 2018, Tanzanian Angel Eaton, who last year became the first Tanzania lady to turn professional, won in 2012, 2013 and 2017.
