Stakeholders ask IFAD to enhance implementation of AFDP project
STAKEHOLDERS of the Agriculture and Fisheries Development Program (AFDP) have asked the International Fund for Agricultural Development-IFAD to effectively facilitate implementation of the project.
The six-year project, worth 78.63 million US dollars, with IFAD contributing 58.85 million US dollars, started in 2021.
It was designed to contribute to inclusive food systems for improved livelihood, food security, nutrition and resilience, including Zanzibar’s priority area of ‘Blue Economy for sustainable development.
During their quarterly meeting held in Zanzibar in ZURA Building-Maisara area, to assess the implementation of the project, stakeholders from both Zanzibar and union government, said that so far, the AFDP has been going on well, but delays in fulfilling some of the commitments in the project agreement, such as purchase of deep-sea fishing vessels, was a setback.
In his brief remarks at the opening session, Dr Aboud Suleiman Jumbe, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry Blue Economy and Fisheries said that timely implementation of the project is important in the realization of Zanzibar’s Blue Economy agenda.
The project funded by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD)- an international financial institution and a specialized agency of the United Nations, is dedicated to eradicating poverty and hunger in rural areas of developing countries.
Participants had initially visited AFDP benefited areas of Morogoro, Manyara, Singida, Dodoma, Tabora, Mwanza, Shinyanga, Geita, Pwani, Lindi and Zanzibar.
They gathered in the meeting to discuss successes and challenges identified in the field tour.
According to Mr Paul Sangawe, director of policy and coordination, Prime Minister’s office in the Union government, the objective of the project is to “enhance sustainable productivity, resilience, profitability and commercialization of selected crop seeds, fisheries and aquaculture”, while devoting particular attention to women’s empowerment and youth participation.
