BOOST project disburses 540.3m/- for new school at Duga Ward

A NEW primary school will be constructed in the Jaje area of Tanga City’s Duga Ward at a cost of 540.3m/- to be able to accommodate the city’s increased primary school enrolment.

The new primary school will be built next to Jaje Primary School with funds from the project to improve access to equal opportunities in the best learning of Early Education and Primary Tanzania Mainland (BOOST).

According to a statement issued by the Head of the City Council’s Communications Unit, Musa Laban the City has received 940m/- from BOOST for the development and strengthening of the city’s pre-primary and primary education.

BOOST is part of the Education Programme for Results (EPforR II), an innovative, results-based financing programme supported by the UK Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), the World Bank, the Government of Sweden (SIDA), the Global Partnership for Education (GPE), and the Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA).

Preparations for the construction of a two-stream school with two rooms for pre-primary education classes, as well as all the school’s infrastructure, including toilets, are underway.

According to Laban, the Tanga City Boost Project Implementation Committee organised a joint meeting of the Ward Development Committee (WDC) and the Jaje area leadership in the early stages to introduce the project to the community and local government administration.

“The community was educated and informed about the project and the receipt of funds at their school for the construction of the new school,” Laban said.

Jaffar Mohamed, a Duga Ward Councillor, thanked the government for providing them with a new school, noting that despite the ward having four primary schools, there are still many children who miss enrolment.

“The construction of the new school will help reduce the problem of overcrowding in classrooms,” Mohamed explained.

Jaffar also congratulated Dr Sipora Liana, Director of the City of Tanga, for her efforts in securing the land for the school’s construction.

The construction of the school is being implemented on a Pay for Results (P for R) system and is expected to be completed before or by June 30, 2023.

The BOOST funds will also be used to build 12 new classrooms at Bombo, Mabawa, Mapambano, and Msara Primary Schools for a total cost of 300m/, with each school receiving three new classrooms.

Two new pre-primary school classrooms will be built at Mapojoni Primary Schools as part of the BOOST programme at a cost of 89m/-. In addition, the BOOST programme will include the construction of fifteen new toilets.
