Dutch envoy lauds Samia for strengthening media performance, freedom
NETHERLANDS Ambassador to Tanzania, Wiebe de Boer has commended the government under President Samia Suluhu Hassan for strengthening the performance and freedom of the media in the country.
Ambassador Boer made the remark recently during the meeting with leaders of the Tanzania Editors Forum (TEF) at the embassy in Dar es Salaam.
“I congratulate President Samia Suluhu Hassan for opening the doors in the performance of the media in Tanzania media freedom is being strengthened as well. It is upon the media to use the opportunity to strengthen their freedom,” Ambassador Boer said.
The envoy also lauded President Samia, describing her as a unifying national figure, wheeling to the current national mood of reconciliation. He cited her recent participation in a meetings of the opposition party as a true testimony of her willingness to unite the country.
On March 8th this year, President Samia broke the myth when she officiated the international women day celebration organised by opposition CHADEMA women’s wing, BAWACHA.
“This is an opportunity to build one country and build a strong economy. Media should not be afraid to work with opposition parties because even the President shows that there is no problem to work with opposition parties,” he said.
He also commended TEF and other media stakeholders for showing solidarity in fighting for freedom of the media, saying that nothing takes a short period to succeed.
On his part, TEF Chairman, Deodatus Balile thanked Ambassador Boer, saying his country has always been close to the media in Tanzania.
He told the Ambassador that the Tanzanian media expects to have a law that promotes the media industry and removes restrictions that can destroy the value of the media industry.
“We believe in the process of amendments on the Media Services Act of 2016. The sixth phase government under President Samia Suluhu Hassan has expressed a desire to remove restrictions on freedom of the media in our country,” he said.
