DAR ES SALAAM: TANZANIA’S national ladies golf team delivered an impressive performance to secure third place at the 2026 All Africa Challenge Trophy (AACT) that concluded on Friday at the IBB International Golf and Country Club in Abuja, Nigeria.
Led by team captain Madina Iddi, alongside Hawa Wanyeche and Neema Olomi, Tanzania posted a three-round total of 479 strokes over the 54-hole team competition, earning a podium finish among 19 participating nations.
The Tanzanian trio demonstrated determination and resilience throughout the three-day championship, recording 160 strokes in the opening round before carding 165 in the second round.
They produced a remarkable response in the final round, returning a score of 154 to secure third place overall and finish the tournament on a high note.
Tanzania’s final-round score was the joint-lowest of the championship, matching Kenya’s 154, while eventual champions South Africa carded 155.
South Africa claimed the title with 464 strokes, followed by Kenya in second place with 470. Tanzania finished nine strokes behind Kenya but maintained a comfortable 21-stroke advantage over fourthplaced hosts Nigeria, who posted 500.
Uganda finished fifth with 504, followed by Zambia (506), Botswana (510), Zimbabwe (521), Ghana and Rwanda (526 each), Tunisia (527), Gabon (542), Mauritius (556), Namibia (568), Malawi (574), Eswatini and Senegal (575 each), Cameroon (583) and Togo (628).
In the individual category, Kenya’s junior golfer Kanana Muthomi emerged champion after recording rounds of 77, 77 and 75 for a three-round total of 229 strokes.
The bronze-medal achievement marks a significant improvement on Tanzania’s fifth-place finish at the 2024 edition in Agadir, Morocco, and further strengthens the country’s position in continental women’s golf.
Tanzania has previously finished runners-up twice, in 2010 in Abuja and in 2018 in Accra, Ghana. The latest podium finish provides fresh encouragement as the country continues its pursuit of a maiden AACT title.
The team competed under the leadership of Tanzania Ladies Golf Union (TLGU) president Timea Chogo, marking her first international assignment since assuming the presidency. TLGU Vice President Ayne Magombe served as team manager.
Chogo commended the National Sports Council (NSC) for its continued support and acknowledged the contributions of CRDB Bank, Kago Africa Limited, Tanzania Breweries Limited (TBL), Saher, TANAPA, Tanzania Golf Union (TGU) and individual well-wishers towards.
