Tanzania eyes technology to reduce water expenses

DODOMA: TANZANIA is exploring science and technology innovations to reduce water supply costs and improve access to the resource for households and the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO).
Deputy Minister for Energy, Salome Makamba, said science, technology and innovation provide young people with opportunities to apply their knowledge to address community challenges and contribute to national development.
She made the remarks on November 5, 2026, during the ongoing Science, Technology and Innovation Exhibition at the Parliament grounds in Dodoma. The exhibition has brought together scientists, innovators and researchers to showcase technological developments and solutions to various challenges.
One of the innovations presented is a water harvesting technology designed to supply more than 10 households, with each household paying according to its water consumption.
Ms Makamba said the technology could reduce water supply expenses for both citizens and TANESCO. She added that the young innovators behind the solution had already begun discussions with the utility on its further development.
She said the government would continue addressing challenges facing innovators to help transform their inventions into marketable solutions that serve national interests.
The Deputy Minister also emphasised the need for incubation programmes to nurture young talent and support the development of ideas into practical technologies addressing community needs.
She said the exhibition highlighted the country’s innovation potential, noting that knowledge and skills acquired through education could create employment, support livelihoods and provide solutions to national challenges.
