Tanzania eyes to prioritise climate finance, harmful gas reduction heading to COP31 in Türkiye

DODOMA: TANZANIA will prioritise climate finance, adaptation and greenhouse gas emission reduction in negotiations at the 31st Conference of the Parties to the UN climate change convention (COP31) scheduled for November 9–20 in Türkiye.

Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Vice-President’s Office (Union Affairs), Dr Latifa Mohammed Khamis, outlined the priorities while opening a meeting of permanent secretaries on the country’s preparations for the conference.

She said Tanzania will also focus on implementing the Paris Agreement, technology transfer, capacity building, carbon markets under Article 6, and addressing loss and damage caused by climate change.

Dr Latifa said the country’s negotiating position should reflect the priorities of both Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar, as well as the needs of key sectors, including agriculture, water, energy, health, infrastructure, forests, ecosystems, marine resources and the blue economy.

“These priorities will also provide an opportunity to advance clean energy, food security, environmental conservation, green industries and youth participation,” she said.

Dr Latifa called on experts to complete the conference action plan, including preparations for side events, bilateral meetings and activities at Tanzania’s exhibition pavilion.

COP31 will bring countries together to negotiate climate action and financing, with Tanzania seeking to advance issues relevant to its development needs and climate resilience.
