Coast targets 12,872 households for health insurance

KIBAHA: COAST Region is targeting 12,872 households, comprising 23,304 beneficiaries, for registration under Phase Two of the Universal Health Insurance Scheme.

During the initial preparations, 1,640 households with 2,296 beneficiaries had been verified and registered, Regional Commissioner Stanslaus Nyongo has said.

Mr Nyongo was briefing reporters in Kibaha Municipality ahead of the official launch of the second phase, scheduled for October 22 at the former Maili Moja bus stand.

He said the scheme was designed to protect households from the financial burden of healthcare by ensuring that families did not have to sell property or borrow money to pay for treatment when faced with health challenges.

“Health is the foundation of community development. When one is in good health, he or she can fully participate in productive activities, including agriculture, business, fishing and other economic activities. Health insurance is a protection that helps safeguard the health and well-being of the family,” he said.

Giving an update on the first phase, Mr Nyongo said that, as of October 20, 2026, a total of 4,463 households had been registered, representing 72 per cent of the target of 6,212 households.

He thanked the government for its continued efforts to ensure that people could access quality health services regardless of their social or economic status.

The regional commissioner urged residents to take advantage of the scheme by registering and paying the required contribution of 150,000/- per household covering up to six people.
