Tanzania earns continental recognition for its advanced water management

LUANDA: TANZANIA has earned recognition from African leaders for its investment in the water sector, with the government’s funding and management of water projects highlighted at a continental meeting in Luanda, Angola.

The recognition came during a meeting of African presidents, foreign affairs ministers and water ministers held under the theme “Water as a Link for Peace,” where leaders discussed the role of water investment and cooperation in addressing resource-related challenges.

Tanzania’s delegation is led by Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation Minister Mahmoud Thabit Kombo, representing President Samia Suluhu Hassan. It also includes Water Minister Jumaa Hamidu Aweso and other government experts.

African leaders cited Tanzania’s prioritisation of the water sector under President Samia’s administration, including the allocation of funds for projects and stronger oversight aimed at expanding access to safe and clean water.

The government has made progress in extending water services to areas that previously faced significant access challenges, while work continues to reach more communities across the country.

The October 22, 2026 meeting is focusing on strengthening governance of Africa’s transboundary water resources as a tool for preventing and resolving conflicts.

Discussions cover water diplomacy, the joint management of shared water resources, community participation, the involvement of women and young people, climate change, migration and conflict, as well as investment in water infrastructure and capacity building.

Tanzania is using the meeting to showcase its achievements in the water sector and highlight its contribution to regional cooperation and the joint management of shared river basins, rivers and lakes.

The discussions underscore the importance of investment in water infrastructure and cooperation among African countries in managing shared resources, particularly as climate change and competing demands place increasing pressure on water supplies.
