The right way to use retinol

DAR ES SALAAM: RETINOL has become a popular ingredient in skincare, thanks to its ability to improve skin texture, soften the appearance of fine lines and help manage acne. However, using it incorrectly can cause dryness, redness and irritation.

For beginners, the secret is to start slowly. Apply a pea-sized amount of retinol to clean, completely dry skin two nights a week, then gradually increase use as your skin adjusts. Follow with a moisturiser to help reduce dryness and support the skin barrier.

Because retinol can make skin more sensitive to irritation, daily sunscreen is essential. Choose a broadspectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher and reapply as directed, especially when spending time outdoors.

Avoid combining retinol with several strong exfoliating products when starting, as this may increase irritation. Pregnant women or those planning pregnancy should avoid topical retinoids and consult a healthcare professional for suitable alternatives.

With patience and consistent care, retinol can become a useful part of a skincare routine.
