Lifestyle changes key to healthy bones, joints

MWANZA: THE general public has been urged to adopt healthy eating habits and engage in regular physical activity to prevent bone and joint problems and maintain mobility at all stages of life.

The advice was given yesterday by a Physiotherapist at Garma Specialised Physiotherapy Clinic in Mwanza, Dr George Claud, during the observance of World Paediatric Bone and Joint Health Day on October 19.

Dr Claud said a balanced diet rich in essential nutrients, combined with appropriate physical activity, plays a vital role in strengthening bones, supporting childhood growth and promoting overall physical well-being.

He encouraged the public to consume calcium-rich foods and obtain vitamin D through appropriate sunlight exposure.

Eggs, fish and leafy green vegetables were among the foods he highlighted as important for bone health.

“We should focus on healthy eating habits by ensuring our meals include different food groups, such as carbohydrates, proteins and vitamins. People engaged in strenuous physical activity need adequate carbohydrates and proteins, depending on their body’s requirements,” he said.

He further said that proteins support body development and childhood growth, while carbohydrates provide energy and vitamins contribute to overall health.

On physical activity, Dr Claud recommended at least 30 minutes of exercise, stressing that the type and intensity should be guided by an individual’s age, health status and physical capacity.

“Exercising without considering one’s physical condition or seeking professional guidance can cause harm, make sure you choose activities appropriate to your needs,” He cautioned.

Dr Claud also advised people experiencing persistent or severe joint pain, swelling, back pain or leg pain to seek medical attention promptly, noting that such symptoms may indicate underlying bone or joint problems.

He further emphasized the importance of maintaining proper posture and avoiding prolonged inactivity, saying regular movement and appropriate exercise are essential for preserving bone and joint health.

The physiotherapist said that some bone and joint conditions can be treated even in older people, depending on the nature of the condition and the patient’s overall health.

He encouraged those affected to seek timely medical care, including physiotherapy where necessary.

He urged the general public to make healthy nutrition, regular physical activity and routine health check-ups part of their daily lives to help prevent complications and maintain healthy bones and joints.
