Climate Hub launches programme to empower youth in climate action

DAR ES SALAAM: CLIMATE Hub Tanzania, in partnership with Climate KIC, has launched the Generation Kijani (Gen_K) programme to strengthen the capacity of youth-led organisations to address climate change and build community resilience across Tanzania.

The nine-month programme, scheduled to run from November 2026 to June 2027, will support five organisations from different regions of the country through training, mentorship, networking opportunities and financial assistance for climate change adaptation projects.

The initiative is led by Climate Hub Tanzania in collaboration with Climate KIC, with funding from the Government of Ireland through its international development programme in Tanzania.

Under the programme, each selected organisation will be eligible to receive funding of up to €5,000 to implement projects aimed at addressing climate change impacts and strengthening resilience within their communities.

The programme will also provide online and in-person training, mentorship, monthly meetings and experience-sharing sessions to improve the organisations’ leadership, project management and resource mobilisation skills.

Speaking to journalists, Climate Hub Tanzania Executive Director Laurel Kivuyo said the partnership with Climate KIC had helped strengthen the institution’s leadership, programme management and project development capacities.

She said Generation Kijani would build on the experience gained through the partnership by extending similar opportunities to other youth-led organisations, enabling them to develop practical solutions to climate change challenges facing their communities.

Climate KIC Programme Manager Lilla Albert said young people in Tanzania had a strong understanding of the challenges facing their communities and had demonstrated creativity and commitment in addressing climate change.

She said the partnership would help young people turn their ideas into practical action through mentorship, needs-based funding and access to a wider network of climate innovators.

The programme will focus on five key areas: strengthening community resilience to climate change, increasing youth participation in climate-related decision-making, promoting environmental education and awareness, developing locally relevant solutions, and building collaborative networks among young people and grassroots organisations.

Through these interventions, Generation Kijani seeks to strengthen youth-led climate initiatives and support the development of sustainable, community-driven responses to climate change in Tanzania.
