Implement IPU resolutions, Zungu urges MPs

ARUSHA: SPEAKER of the National Assembly, Mussa Zungu, has urged delegates to the 153rd Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly to translate its resolutions into legislation, policies and practical action to improve people’s lives in their respective countries.
Delivering his closing remarks at the Assembly’s General Meeting in Arusha yesterday, Mr Zungu, who doubles as President of the 153rd IPU Assembly, called on parliamentarians to renew their commitment to dialogue, cooperation and inclusion, warning against allowing the resolutions to remain unimplemented.
“Let us therefore take the spirit of Arusha with us. Let us renew our commitment to dialogue rather than division, cooperation rather than confrontation and inclusion rather than exclusion. Most importantly, let us ensure that the resolutions of this Assembly do not remain merely words on paper,” he said.
He congratulated Milton Dick, Speaker of Australia’s House of Representatives, on his election as the new IPU President, saying his victory reflected the confidence and trust members had placed in his leadership.
Mr Zungu also commended all candidates who contested various positions, particularly the IPU presidency, noting that although several candidates had presented themselves, only one could win.
“As we move forward, let us put the electoral process behind us and come together as one united IPU. Our strength lies in our unity, solidarity and shared commitment to advancing the IPU’s values and objectives,” he said.
He wished Mr Dick success and expressed readiness to work with him towards building a stronger and more effective global parliamentary community.
Mr Zungu said the Assembly took place amid profound global uncertainty, characterised by conflicts, tensions, poverty, hunger and displacement affecting millions of people.
He added that economic pressures, climate challenges, technological transformation and growing demands for accountability and inclusion required parliamentarians to rethink their approach to global challenges.
“In such circumstances, we cannot approach our work as business as usual,” he said, urging delegates to use international parliamentary gatherings to promote dialogue, dignity, respect, inclusion and solidarity.

The Speaker thanked President Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan for agreeing to host the Assembly and providing support and guidance towards its successful organisation.
He also commended IPU Secretary-General Anda Filip and the Assembly’s organising committee, led by Clerk of the National Assembly Baraka Leonard, for their efforts.
Mr Zungu further thanked Arusha Regional Commissioner Amos Makalla and the regional authorities, alongside staff of the Arusha International Conference Centre, transport providers, security personnel, caterers, ICT and media teams and protocol officers.
“Madam Secretary-General, the 153rd Assembly is your first and everyone will agree with me that you have done it justice. Congratulations!” he said.
He also expressed gratitude to Tanzanians, particularly residents of Arusha, for welcoming delegates with warmth and hospitality, saying the Assembly had demonstrated the country’s commitment to peace, unity and friendship
