TANROADS to install 400 streetlights in Geita

GEITA: THE Tanzania National Roads Agency (TANROADS) has installed 400 streetlights in Geita Municipal Council and other areas across Geita Region during the 2026/27 financial year.

Acting TANROADS Geita Regional Manager, Engineer Hosea Machaka, announced the development to journalists, saying the installation programme was carried out between September and October 2026.

Engineer Machaka said the initiative aims to improve the safety of drivers, pedestrians and business operators at night, thereby reducing road accidents and incidents of crime.

He noted that streetlights are particularly important during the rainy season because they improve visibility for drivers and enhance safety on roads with heavy traffic.

He added that the installation of the lights is part of the government’s strategy, implemented through TANROADS, to improve the appearance of urban areas, strengthen security, and promote economic activities and transportation at night.

Engineer Machaka also urged residents to cooperate with the government in protecting and maintaining road infrastructure, including the newly installed streetlights, to improve service delivery, road safety and economic development.

Meanwhile, Peter Kulwa, an entrepreneur and resident of Shilabela, said the streetlights had transformed the business environment in the area. He explained that traders previously had to close their businesses early because of poor lighting.

“Before the streetlights were installed, we conducted our businesses in darkness because there were no lights along the road. Since they were installed, we have been able to conduct our businesses more effectively,” Kulwa said.

He added that the improved lighting now allows him to sell fruit from around 6 p.m. until 11 p.m. or midnight, whereas previously business activities generally ended at around 9 p.m.

For his part, transport officer Novatus Amin said the streetlights had eliminated the challenges of working and walking in darkness, enabling people to remain at parking areas at night without fear, unlike in the past.
