Dr Tulia drums for the laws to protect health rights for women, children, youth
ARUSHA: THE President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), Dr Tulia Ackson, has issued four directives to member parliaments, calling for stronger action to improve the health and well-being of women, children and young people.
Dr Ackson issued the directives on Thursday, October 8, 2026, during a discussion on maternal and child health organised by the Tanzanian government for IPU parliamentarians in Arusha.
The directives include strengthening laws that protect the health and rights of women, children and young people, while ensuring that policy commitments are backed by adequate budgetary allocations.
She also called on countries to prioritise investment in primary healthcare, maternal and newborn health, child and adolescent health, nutrition and access to essential medicines.

In addition, Dr Ackson stressed the need to strengthen oversight and accountability to ensure that health resources reach citizens. She also called for policies that deliver measurable results in implementation and for women and young people to be meaningfully involved in decisions affecting their lives and health.
She said implementing the directives would help turn commitments into action, action into accountability and, ultimately, accountability into tangible results in improving health outcomes for women, children and young people.
