Zungu calls on IPU members to cooperate in bolstering maternal and child healthcare services
ARUSHA: THE Speaker of the Tanzanian Parliament, Mussa Zungu, has called on member countries of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) to strengthen cooperation in promoting the health and well-being of women, children and young people as a means of advancing sustainable development.
Zungu made the call today, October 8, 2026, during a discussion on maternal and child health organised by the Government of Tanzania for IPU parliamentarians in Arusha.
He stressed that parliamentarians have an important role to play in enacting health-friendly legislation, overseeing the implementation of health programmes and ensuring that resources reach healthcare facilities and communities.

He said these measures are essential to improving the health and well-being of citizens.
Zungu said Africa does not need strategies alone, but tangible results, urging parliamentarians to use their experience to translate political commitments into practical action and deliver lasting improvements in people’s lives.
He further emphasised the importance of parliamentary leadership and accountability in ensuring that commitments on women’s, children’s and young people’s health result in measurable improvements at the community level.
