MUWSA Board pledges improved water services

MOSHI: MOSHI Urban Water and Sanitation Authority (MUWSA) has been urged to adopt modern technology and innovation to improve water service delivery.

Deputy Water Minister, Eng Kundo Mathew made the call on Monday during the inauguration of MUWSA’s ninth Board of Directors in Moshi.

He said the government’s investment in water infrastructure makes digital solutions essential for sustainable management and reliable services.

He cited the Smart Prepaid Water Meter Project, saying it would improve billing accuracy, reduce non-revenue water losses and increase revenue collection.

Eng Mathew urged the new board to build on its predecessor’s work, stressing that board membership carries responsibility for accountability and execution.

“It is unacceptable for citizens to face shortages despite heavy government investment in water projects. Ensure water is available to all,” he said.

MUWSA Managing Director, Engineer Kija Limbe said the authority has achieved 100 per cent water coverage in Moshi Urban and 82 per cent in 12 wards in Himo, Moshi District Council.

He said water production has risen from about 67,000 litres to more than 76,000 litres per day, sourced from springs, rivers and deep wells.

The outgoing Chairman, Professor Jafari Kideghesho, stated that one of the major achievements of the outgoing eighth board was the implementation and completion of seven projects worth 8.34bn/- and noted that there are other projects valued at 10.5bn/- that are currently underway.

“During that period, the authority also established a modern water laboratory that enables the authority to routinely upgrade its operational and water testing capabilities as well as acquiring vehicles for officials to monitor and improve distribution to clients,” he said.

He added, “Moshi is growing rapidly, its industrial, commercial and domestic water needs are scaling every day, I urge the new board to remember that the measurement of its (new board) success will be judged by the satisfaction of the people of Moshi whose greatest desire is to secure a reliable water supply throughout the year”.

New MUWSA board chairman, Prof Alfred Sife said the board would use its three-year mandate to work with management to improve service quality and meet customers’ and government expectations.
