DRC draws lessons from Tanzania’s experience in advancing communication services

DODOMA: THE Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is drawing lessons from Tanzania’s experience in expanding communication services, particularly in rural areas, as it seeks to accelerate implementation of its own connectivity programmes.
Tanzania shared its experience in policy development, government oversight, implementation of universal service policy and coordination of communication services through the Universal Communications Service Access Fund (UCSAF) during an experience-sharing meeting held in Dodoma on October 6, 2026.
Speaking during the meeting, Acting Director of the Communications Department in the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, Engineer Edith Turuka, said Tanzania is implementing strategic projects to strengthen communication infrastructure, including the National ICT Broadband Backbone, National Physical Addressing Project (NaPA) and construction of the National Digital and ICT Training Institute (NDTI) in Nala, Dodoma.

UCSAF Chief Executive Officer Mulembwa Denis Munaku said improvements in the communications sector, particularly in rural areas, has increased access to communication services and uptake of digital services.
According to him, Tanzania is targeting universal access to communication services by 2030.
DRC Director of Universal Service Christian Kavulu said the delegation has come to Tanzania to learn from its experience and achievements and use the lessons to accelerate communication programmes in DRC.
The meeting also highlighted the importance of cooperation between governments, the private sector and other stakeholders in developing communications and the digital economy.
