DSE records surge in equity turnover

DAR ES SALAAM: THE value of equity turnover at the Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange (DSE) surged 231.2 per cent in the third quarter of 2026, reflecting increased trading activity and investor participation.
The DSE’s third-quarter market report shows equity turnover rose to 824.08bn/- between July and September, from 248.64bn/- in the same period last year.
Average daily equity transactions stood at 8.96bn/-, highlighting stronger activity in the equities market. DSE Director of Finance Lucas Sinkala told reporters yesterday that the increase reflected heightened equities trading and greater investor participation.
“We believe the performance reflects growing confidence and interest in the capital market as an avenue for investment and wealth creation,” he said.
He represented the Chief Executive Officer, Peter Nalitolela. The rise in equity turnover coincided with growth in overall market capitalisation, which reached 40.6tri/- by September 30, up 90.3 per cent from 21.34tri/- a year earlier. In addition, the market capitalisation of the 22 domestic companies also rose more than double from 107.4 per cent to 28.10 tri/- at the end of quarter from 13.55 tri/- recorded during the same period last year.
NMB Bank Plc led the market in terms of market capitalisation, reaching 10.35 tri/- by the end of the quarter, followed by CRDB Bank Plc with 7.70 tri/-.
The strong performance was also reflected in the DSE All Share Index (DSEI), which measures the performance of all 28 listed companies. The index rose to 4,654.22 points during the quarter, representing an 86.9 per cent increase from 2,489.70 points recorded in the third quarter of 2025.
Moreover, the Tanzania Share Index (TSI), which tracks the performance of the 22 domestic listed companies, also increased by 80.88 per cent to 10,339.85 points from 5,118.80 points. The bourse said the growth in both indices was largely supported by strong performance of listed banking stocks.

The Banking, Finance and Investment Index (BI) rose by 152.89 per cent to 23,382.10 points from 9,245.90 points recorded in the corresponding period last year. Meanwhile, the value of transactions in government bonds, corporate bonds, public institution bonds and Sukuk stood at 1.419tri/- during the third quarter, down 12 per cent from 1.617tri/- recorded in the same quarter of 2025.
Moreover, by the end of last year, the value of listed government bonds had reached 33.47tri/- up by 17.19 per cent compared to 28.56tri/- recorded at the end of September last year. Listed corporate and public institution bonds and Sukuk in shillings rose 46.70 per cent to 1.741tri/-, from 1.187tri/-, while foreigncurrency issues increased 21.02 per cent to 186.05 million US dollars from 153.74 million US dollars.
Exchange-traded funds (ETFs) also grew, recording transactions worth 28.7bn/- during the quarter. By the end of last month, listed ETF market capitalisation stood at 238bn/- , compared with none a year earlier.
The first ETF was listed in October 2025 at 6.8bn/-. Investor participation also increased, with the number of investors rising 37.1 per cent to 896,735 from 654,000 a year earlier.
