More women urged to take up rallying
MOROGORO: MOROGORO District Commissioner Mussa Kilakala has called on more women to take up car racing, noting the limited participation of female drivers in the sport. Kilakala made the call over the weekend during the Serengeti Rally Tanzania 2026 in Morogoro, where Uganda’s Susan Muwonge is the only female driver among the 24 competitors taking part in the event.
“I would like to take this opportunity to encourage women who are drivers to come forward in large numbers and participate in this sport,” Kilakala said.
The rally, which runs from October 1 to 4 at the Tanzania Forest Services (TFS) tree plantation in Morogoro Region, has attracted drivers from Tanzania and other countries.

Nine drivers are competing for the African Rally Championship (ARC) title, while the rest are contesting the national championship. Muwonge is competing for the ARC title. Kilakala also urged spectators to observe safety measures during the competition and called on participants and fans to protect the environment around the forest area hosting the rally.
Chief Steward Mosi Makau said the event was creating opportunities for residents and contributing to economic activity in Morogoro Region. TFS Deputy Commissioner for Conservation and Director of Tree Seed Production Hamza Katety said the agency would continue protecting the forest while supporting activities that can take place in conservation areas without harming the environment.
He also encouraged residents and visitors to explore ecotourism opportunities and natural attractions in Morogoro Region.
