Dar bolsters its preparedness for El Niño rains
DAR ES SALAAM: THE Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner, Albert Chalamila, has urged leaders at various levels to ensure that government directives, particularly those concerning cleanliness and environmental conservation, are implemented in practice, stressing that officials should not have to be repeatedly reminded of their responsibilities.
Chalamila made the remarks today during a visit to Kinondoni District, where he inspected Mkwajuni Bridge and the Ng’ombe River ahead of the El Niño rains. He said the Kinondoni Municipal Council had done a good job implementing directives issued by the Vice-President on cleanliness and environmental conservation.
He said there was nothing wrong with a leader being reminded of their responsibilities once, but stressed that it was not appropriate for officials to require repeated reminders about their duties. He urged fellow leaders to step up supervision and accelerate the implementation of government directives.
The Regional Commissioner also called on local government leaders to closely monitor their respective areas and ensure that emerging challenges are addressed promptly. He stressed the importance of involving residents in efforts to protect the environment.
Chalamila said the rapid growth of Dar es Salaam must be accompanied by changes in residents’ attitudes towards environmental conservation. He noted that areas that were undeveloped just a few years ago now have numerous buildings as development activities and urbanisation continue to expand.
He said the situation requires residents to plan accordingly and recognise that they are living in a rapidly growing city, with everyone having a responsibility to ensure that the environment remains clean and safe.

He added that the government would continue working with residents to address environmental challenges, while urging the public to be part of the solution by actively participating in cleaning and maintaining their surroundings.
Kinondoni District Administrative Secretary, Warda Obathany, said the district had put measures in place to educate residents against dumping waste into drainage channels, which can cause blockages and create problems for local communities.
