Zanzibar urged to cash in on culture, arts during AFCON

ZANZIBAR: ZANZIBAR residents have been urged to turn the expected influx of AFCON 2027 visitors into income opportunities through culture, arts and sports.

The Minister for Information, Arts, Culture and Sports, Dr Riziki Pembe Juma, made the call on Saturday evening, saying the expected influx of visitors during AFCON 2027 presents an opportunity for residents to use Zanzibar’s rich cultural heritage, arts and sporting activities to generate income and contribute to development.

“We should use this opportunity through our culture, arts and sports because they can bring development to our people,” she said.

The minister said the government, working with various stakeholders, was creating a conducive environment for residents to participate in income-generating activities during the tournament.

She urged residents to prepare to make the most of the opportunities that will come with increased visitor numbers, while ensuring Zanzibar’s traditions and cultural identity are preserved.

Riziki said traditional dances, artistic performances and sports could play an important role in bringing people together, strengthening solidarity and preserving the islands’ cultural heritage. She called on residents to work with the government to protect Zanzibar’s culture while using it as a tool for economic and social development.

“We are making these efforts today, and tomorrow we expect future generations to continue what we are doing today,” she said.

The minister said the theme of this year’s festival, “Our Culture is a Heritage for Our Generations; Use Cultural Opportunities at AFCON 2027,” was intended to encourage residents to see culture not only as a heritage to be preserved, but also as an opportunity for development.
