Police in Mwanza apprehend 72 tricycle riders for violating road safety rules
MWANZA: POLICE in Mwanza have apprehended 72 tricycle drivers, along with their vehicles, for the offense of transporting cargo in a dangerous manner.
Speaking today in Mwanza City, Mwanza Regional Police Commander ACP Wilbroad Mutafungwa has said that the drivers were arrested while operating their tricycle heavily loaded with cargo, disregarding the safety of other road users.
He further explained that tricycle have been used to transport hazardous loads, a practice that endangers the safety of road users.
Commander Mutafungwa noted that the police are continuing to take action against road safety violations.
He mentioned receiving various reports highlighting the dangerous loading of cargo on tricycle as a major concern, noting that this practice jeopardizes the safety of passengers, cargo, and the drivers themselves.
“Dangerous cargo loading has been causing accidents, as well as the loss of property, damage to infrastructure, and loss of life,” he said.
In a separate development, the Mwanza Regional Police Force has received three Toyota Probox vehicles to bolster road safety and security.
The three vehicles were donated by the Road Safety Committee Chairperson, Fredinard Chacha. Chacha stated that he provided the vehicles to strengthen road safety efforts.
Commander Mutafungwa announced that the three vehicles would be deployed to Misungwi, Sengerema, and Magu to enhance road safety.
