Tax compliance key to market growth

MWANZA: TRADERS at Kirumba International Fish Market in Mwanza have been urged to comply with tax and levy requirements to strengthen public revenue and support improvements at the major fish trading hub.

Mwanza Regional Commissioner (RC), CP Salum Hamduni, made the call yesterday when he addressed traders at the market, which contributes about 11 per cent of Ilemela Municipal Council’s total revenue.

“Paying levies and taxes is a crucial part of enabling the government to continue providing services and improving infrastructure in business areas,” he said.

CP Hamduni also urged traders to operate from morning until evening, saying extended business hours could increase commercial activity and improve the market’s contribution to the local economy.

He described the market as a vital centre for fish trading in the region and commended traders for maintaining cleanliness, saying the facility’s condition was satisfactory.

Ilemela District Commissioner Mr Amir Mkalipa said the Mwaloni-Kirumba International Fish Market was continuing to undergo improvements despite challenges affecting its operations.

He said the market facilitates the sourcing and distribution of fish products to different destinations, making it an important trading hub within Mwanza and beyond.

However, traders said further investment in infrastructure and security was needed to improve efficiency and create a better business environment.

Trader Mr Rajab Hassan called for installation of adequate lighting to enable longer operating hours, as well as security cameras in different sections of the market.

He said improved lighting and surveillance would strengthen security and support more efficient operations at the internationally recognised facility.

Another trader, Mr Paul Chitalilo, urged authorities to address water leakage affecting some sections of the market, particularly during the rainy season.

He said infrastructure upgrades, improved security and adequate lighting would enable traders to operate in safer conditions while enhancing the market’s capacity to support fish trade and generate revenue.

The improvements, traders said, would also strengthen Kirumba’s role as a major distribution centre for fish products and enhance its contribution to Ilemela Municipal Council’s revenue base.
