Makonda pushes sports diplomacy

SPAIN: THE Minister for Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, Paul Makonda, has invited FC Barcelona stars to visit Tanzania as part of the ongoing strategic campaign to inspire youth and promote the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals.

During a high-profile tour of the Catalan club’s historic headquarters, Makonda met with several first-team players, including teenage sensation Lamine Yamal, who is widely regarded as one of the finest recent products of the famous Barca’s La Masia youth academy.

The primary objective of the minister’s European tour was to establish a sustainable pipeline of relations that is expected to grant talented youth across Tanzania and the wider East African region a direct access to elite development opportunities within European academies.

Makonda utilised the global platform to market Tanzania’s sports infrastructure ahead of the continental tournament.

Concluding his historic visit, the minister held extensive discussions with the players, extending individual invitations for them to experience Tanzania’s unique cultural heritage and world-famous tourist attractions.

He heavily marketed the nation’s iconic landmarks, including Mount Kilimanjaro and the world-renowned Ngorongoro Crater.

Makonda assured the international stars that once they land in Tanzania, they will witness the breathtaking, untouched beauty of nature that attracts millions of global travellers annually.

The minister’s aggressive international sports diplomacy is part of a broader, continuous initiative to elevate domestic football.

He previously hosted legendary English Premier League figures and former national team captains, Rio Ferdinand and Didier Drogba of Ivory Coast on similar promotions.

This strategic institutional visit successfully establishes a fresh chapter of technical cooperation and bilateral football development between Tanzania and major global footballing powerhouses.

The collaborative frameworks will actively support local coaches and football administrators in talent identification.

Tanzania, alongside East African neighbours Kenya and Uganda, will co-host the prestigious AFCON 2027 finals, while the country is also gearing up to host the iconic Miss World pageant next year.

  1. Sports diplomacy is an interesting idea because sport can create connections between countries and communities in a way that traditional politics often cannot. Football, athletics, basketball, and other sports can bring people together through competition, shared events, and youth development.

It will be interesting to see how initiatives like this develop and whether they lead to more international partnerships, exchanges, and opportunities for young athletes.
