ACSACONM awards inspiring nurses and midwives in Zanzibar
ZANZIBAR: THE Golden Tulip Airport Zanzibar Hotel was abuzz with excitement as it hosted the Official Opening and Graduation Ceremony organized by the East, Central and Southern Africa College of Nursing and Midwifery (ECSACONM).
The event brought together dignitaries, graduates, and partners in a celebration of achievements and future aspirations in nursing and midwifery education.
The ceremony began with a grand procession by various chapters of ECSACONM, followed by the ceremonial lighting of the lamp by Ms Agnes Mtawa, the Registrar of the Tanzania Nursing and Midwifery Council.
The event was attended by representatives from the Intuitive Foundation, Laerdal Foundation, Jhpiego, AMREF, and several UN agencies such as UNFPA, UNICEF, and WHO. The diplomatic missions from Oman, China, and India were also in attendance, highlighting the international significance of the event.
During a heartfelt welcome address, Dr Glory Msibi, the ECSACONM President, emphasized the pivotal role of nursing and midwifery in shaping the future of healthcare.
She said, “Our graduates are not just professionals; they are the backbone of our healthcare systems, dedicated to improving lives and communities. Today, we celebrate not only their achievements but also the commitment to excellence that they embody.”
In retrospect,Dr Ntuli Kapologwe, Director General of the East, Central and Southern Africa Health Community (ECSA-HCM), highlighted the collaborative efforts needed to advance healthcare education, saying, “Together, we can build a stronger healthcare workforce that meets the challenges of our time. Education is the key to unlocking potential, and our partnerships are vital in this journey.”
A significant moment of the ceremony was the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the Ministry of Health Zanzibar (MOHZ) and ECSACONM, aimed at enhancing nursing education and practice standards in the region. This partnership signifies a commitment to fostering innovation and improving healthcare delivery through enhanced training programs.
The highlight of the day was the ECSACONM Graduation Ceremony, where graduates were honored for their hard work and dedication.

The ceremony recognized honorary fellows and fellows elected by their peers, culminating in the announcement of the “Best Candidate” award. The graduates were celebrated for their commitment to excellence in nursing and midwifery.
The Showtime Managing Director Ibrahim Mitawi, the Event Manager said: “Each graduate here today represents a beacon of hope for our communities. The knowledge and skills will advance careers and transform the lives of many and innovate the healthcare sector.”
The ceremony not only marked a significant milestone for the graduates but also reinforced the commitment of ECSACONM and its partners to advancing healthcare education across East, Central, and Southern Africa.
