Tanzania envisions increasing electricity generation capacity to 8,000 megawatts

DODOMA: TANZANIA plans to increase its electricity generation capacity to 8,000 megawatts by 2030, creating significant investment opportunities in the country’s energy sector, Deputy Minister for Energy Salome Makamba has said.

Makamba said the government was seeking investors with financial resources, technological expertise and professional capabilities to support the implementation of various energy projects aimed at achieving the target.

She made the remarks in Dodoma at the Mtumba Government City during a meeting with executives from PowerChina, led by the company’s Vice President for East and Southern Africa, Yu Haian. The delegation visited the Ministry of Energy to discuss investment opportunities and potential cooperation in Tanzania’s energy sector.

“The government intends to achieve this increase in electricity generation through a combination of energy sources, including hydropower, solar, wind and geothermal energy,” Makamba said.

She added that diversifying electricity generation sources would strengthen energy security and improve the reliability of electricity supply for households and economic activities.
