TCL sues Samsung over ‘Mini LED’ branding

LOS ANGELES, United States: Technology company TCL has filed a lawsuit against Samsung in a federal court in Los Angeles, challenging the use of the term “Mini LED” in advertisements for some of Samsung’s television models.

According to a Reuters report published on September 1, 2026, the complaint concerns Samsung’s M Model televisions, which TCL alleges are marketed as using Mini LED technology despite what it claims are the absence of some technological enhancements associated with the technology.

In its complaint, TCL argues that Mini LED technology used in its televisions helps improve picture quality, including by enhancing contrast between brighter and darker areas of the screen.

The company claims that Samsung’s use of the “Mini LED” designation in its advertising could lead consumers to believe that the televisions offer the technological benefits and performance associated with Mini LED technology.

TCL further alleges that the use of the term has negatively affected its business, including its sales and reputation in the highly competitive television market.

Samsung, however, has rejected the allegations and said it will vigorously defend itself against the lawsuit.

The South Korean electronics giant has maintained that it is committed to the quality of its products and the accuracy of the information it provides to consumers about their features and capabilities.

In the lawsuit, TCL has asked the court to prohibit the allegedly misleading use of the “Mini LED” name and related claims.

It is also seeking damages, although the amount of compensation requested has not been specified.

The dispute highlights the increasingly intense competition among global television manufacturers as advanced display technologies become an important selling point for consumers.

However, the allegations made by TCL are part of an ongoing legal proceeding and have not been established or proven by the court.
