Banana Zorro sees rare creativity in Bongo Flava as It gallantly sails on with time

Among them is veteran musician Banana Zorro, widely recognised for his distinctive voice and songs that have connected with audiences through messages drawn from everyday life.

Banana Zorro is no stranger to Tanzania’s music industry. In an exclusive interview with the Daily News Digital, the musician said his journey into music began at a young age, largely influenced by growing up in a family deeply rooted in the arts.

His father, Mzee Zahir Ally Zorro, was a respected musician in Tanzania’s dance music scene. Growing up in such an environment exposed Banana to music from an early age and eventually inspired him to establish his own identity in the industry.

His popularity grew significantly after the release of “Mama Yangu,” a song that resonated with audiences through its message of love, gratitude and appreciation for mothers.

He followed the success with a number of other songs, including “Nipo Radhi,” “Nzela,” “Mama Kumbena,” “Mapenzi Gani” and “Zoba,” further demonstrating his ability to blend melody, emotion and storytelling.

He says respecting contracts, maintaining professionalism and building trust with fans and event organisers have helped him sustain his career.

He has also focused on maintaining good working relationships with fellow musicians and supporting them in pursuing their ambitions, even when some eventually leave to pursue other projects or opportunities.

For his fans, Banana says he continues to appreciate the affection they show him, particularly when they approach him after performances and at various events.

The musician also acknowledges the major changes brought about by the growth of social media.

He identifies TikTok, Instagram and YouTube as some of the platforms that have enabled artists to connect directly with audiences, unlike in the past when radio and television were the main channels for promoting music.

However, he says the achievements of previous generations of musicians should not be overlooked, noting that many established successful careers without the social media platforms available today.

Advice to Emerging Musicians

Banana Zorro advises emerging artists to pay greater attention to the language they use when writing songs if they want their music to remain relevant over time.

He argues that relying heavily on short-lived slang and expressions whose meanings can fade with changing generations may affect the longevity of an artist’s work.

He also says he and his team continue to support young talent as part of efforts to nurture the next generation of Tanzanian musicians.

A Family Musical Legacy

Banana Zorro comes from a family with a strong musical heritage.

He was born alongside his sister, Maunda Zorro, who was also known in Tanzania’s music industry before her death.

That history remains an important part of Banana’s identity as he carries forward the family’s musical legacy while continuing to build a name of his own.

Beyond music, Banana Zorro is also involved in acting and is currently part of the television drama Huba.

In his personal life, he is a father of three children — two boys and a girl — and emphasises the importance of protecting family privacy and maintaining a distinction between personal life and professional commitments.
