TPHPA removes 245 pesticides from market after they failed to meet legal standards

DODOMA: THE Tanzania Plant Health and Pesticides Authority (TPHPA) has removed 245 pesticides from the market after they were found to have failed to meet legal standards, following inspections of 50,157 pesticide shops across the country during the 2025/2026 financial year.

The announcement was made on August 27, 2026, in Dodoma by TPHPA Director General Professor Joseph Ndunguru while presenting the Authority’s performance report for the 2025/2026 financial year and its implementation plan for 2026/2027.

Professor Ndunguru said that during the period under review, the Authority also registered 508 new pesticides as part of efforts to ensure that agricultural products meet required safety and quality standards.

He said the inspections were conducted to protect consumers’ health and the environment from potential harm resulting from the improper use of pesticides.

According to Professor Ndunguru, TPHPA will continue strengthening the regulation and control of pesticides in the country, including monitoring pesticide residues in food crops entering Tanzania.

He said the measure is essential to ensure that food reaching consumers is safe and to protect public health.
