Tanzania hails Dr Fisseha’s efforts in bolstering women’s health, health systems across Africa

ADDIS ABABA: THE Deputy Minister for Health, Dr Florence Samizi, has praised Dr Senait Fisseha for her significant contribution to strengthening women’s health, reproductive health and health systems across Africa, alongside other stakeholders in the health sector.

Dr Samizi made the remarks on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, during an event held in honour of Dr Senait Fisseha at the headquarters of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

“Dr Senait’s leadership, vision and dedication have made a lasting contribution to global health, particularly in advancing reproductive health and rights and strengthening health systems across Africa,” Dr Samizi said.

She also commended the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation for its continued partnership with Tanzania in strengthening the country’s health sector. Since 2022, Tanzania has received a total of 51.8m US dollars  from the foundation, while an additional 15m US dollars has been agreed, bringing total funding commitments to 66.8m US dollars.

Dr Samizi said the funding has contributed to improving reproductive, maternal and child health services, expanding services for young people and upgrading infrastructure at health facilities across the country.

She added that the investment has supported capacity-building for approximately 13,000 health workers and reached about 4,500 community health workers.

The partnership has also contributed to the implementation of Universal Health Insurance, benefiting 8,000 people, as well as the rollout of Electronic Medical Records systems at 167 health facilities.
