Zanzibar marks 20 years of community policing by involving public in security matters

ZANZIBAR: THE Deputy Minister for Home Affairs, Ayoub Mohammed Mahmoud, has urged members of the public to expose criminals and promptly report suspected criminal activities to security authorities to enable appropriate legal action to be taken.

Deputy Minister made the call during celebrations marking 20 years of community policing, held in Chaani, North Unguja Region.

He urged citizens not to conceal or protect criminals because of family ties, friendship or personal acquaintance, but instead to cooperate with security authorities in efforts to prevent and combat crime.

He also called on volunteers participating in community policing activities to perform their duties with integrity and commitment.

The Deputy Minister said the community policing system was designed to strengthen cooperation between citizens and the Police Force in combating crime, including theft and drug abuse, while promoting a law-abiding society with strong moral values.

He said effective community participation in security matters was essential to preventing crime and creating safer communities across Zanzibar.
