Mwanza hails construction of passenger terminal for upgrading the status of regional airport

MWANZA: MWANZA Regional Commissioner, Said Mtanda, has hailed the Tanzanian government’s project to construct a passenger terminal capable of handling over 7,000 passengers at a time at the regional airport saying it will give the airport an international status.
He made this known today, August 24, 2026, while speaking to the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Mr Charles Kadonya, who accompanied a team of experts from the ministry on a 2-day visit to inspect strategic projects in the region.
Mr Mtanda said Mwanza airport serves more than 500,000 people per year and transports passengers within the country and from various countries in Africa and the world in general, so the government is determined to make it international with a major upgrade that will cost more than 45bn/-.
In addition, he said that the people of Mwanza continue with economic activities including large-scale agriculture to provide them with crops for food and savings for trade as well as fishing through Lake Victoria but the biggest challenge they face is the presence of weeds that reduce the size of the lake.
“The issues we are facing a lot are the conservation of the lake, our beaches are not attractive because weeds have swallowed them all up to urban areas, a situation caused by environmental pollution, so we ask you to help us remind the Ministry of Environment about a plant to process these weeds.” Mtanda said.
On his side, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Mr Charles Kadonya, said that the people of the community will benefit from major investments involving the improvement of the value chain through projects in the Lake Victoria basin including the facilitation of modern fish fishing groups.
