Zanzibar, China launch marine research initiative

ZANZIBAR: ZANZIBAR and China have launched a joint technical initiative to strengthen marine research and data collection, with the aim of protecting coastal ecosystems and supporting the island’s growing blue economy.

Opening a 14-day training programme for marine specialists, Deputy Minister for Blue Economy and Fisheries Ms Mboja Ramadhan Mshenga said reliable data was essential for preventing overexploitation and guiding sustainable ocean management.

“Scientific research provides direction for the proper use of the ocean and helps create a safe environment for marine life,” she said.

Ms Mshenga noted that accurate scientific information would enable authorities and stakeholders to make informed decisions and ensure marine resources continue to support livelihoods and economic activities.

Zanzibar has prioritised the blue economy, including fisheries, aquaculture and coastal tourism, as a key driver of economic growth.

However, limited technical capacity has constrained effective monitoring of marine resources and ocean conditions.

Chinese Ambassador to Tanzania Mr Li Qianghua said the initiative would transfer modern data-collection techniques to local experts, helping Zanzibar balance conservation with economic development.

The training is being conducted by experts from the People’s Republic of China. Director-General of the Fisheries and Marine Resources Research Institute Dr Zakaria Ali Khamis said the programme would equip participants with skills to improve the utilisation and management of marine resources.

He stressed that stronger scientific knowledge was vital for maximising the benefits of marine resources while ensuring their sustainability.

Dr Khamis added that the training would enhance decision-making and strengthen management of the marine environment.
