Baba Karudi wins Fumba dhow race

ZANZIBAR: BABA Karudi, skippered by Hassan Thajo, emerged victorious in a closely fought ngalawa race in the waters off Fumba, seeing off 11 other crews in the traditional sailing contest.

The race formed part of the second edition of the Futopia Zanzibar Festival, held from August 8 to 9 as part of a programme promoting traditional sports and strengthening community ties in Fumba and Fumba Town.

Baba Karudi claimed the top spot, while Wape Kazi, captained by Aboubakari Kondo, finished runners-up. Utoto Raha, under the leadership of Hussein Thajo, completed the podium in third place.

Futopia Zanzibar Traditional Sports Coordinator Joseph Klanda said the competition was organised to add excitement to the festival while allowing residents to come together, enjoy themselves and participate in traditional sporting activities.

He said Baba Karudi raced with the support of Fortitude Security, while Wape Kazi competed under the Futopia banner and Utoto Raha sailed under the Clouds Media banner.

Klanda said all 12 crews received cash prizes and certificates of appreciation for taking part in the competition.
