Tanzanian Parliamentary calls for effective strategies to address challenges facing the land sector
DODOMA: THE Parliamentary Standing Committee on Lands, Natural Resources and Tourism has called on the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Human Settlements Development to develop effective strategies to address land disputes and challenges facing the land sector in Tanzania.
The call was made by the Committee’s Chairman, Timotheo Mzava, when committee members met with the Deputy Minister for Lands, Housing and Human Settlements Development, Kaspar Mmuya, at the Parliament offices in Dodoma to receive and discuss a report on land disputes in the country.
The meeting was part of the Parliament of the United Republic of Tanzania’s mandate to oversee and monitor the implementation of government responsibilities, including those in the land sector.
During the meeting, the Ministry presented a report outlining various types of land disputes, their causes, measures being taken to address them and the challenges facing the Ministry in resolving the disputes.
The Ministry also briefed the Committee on measures and plans it has put in place to address challenges facing the land sector, including efforts to strengthen mechanisms for resolving land disputes.
Speaking during the meeting, Mzava said the Committee recognised that the land sector continued to face numerous challenges requiring strategic and sustainable action by the responsible ministry.

He said the situation required the Ministry to continue seeking effective ways of addressing the challenges to reduce land disputes and ensure citizens receive better services in land-related matters.
“We need effective strategies for addressing land challenges. We must reach an agreement, and a strategy needs to be developed to guide us in dealing with land-related challenges,” Mzava said.
He stressed that the strategy should clearly outline implementation measures, the responsibilities of stakeholders and mechanisms for monitoring results to ensure challenges in the land sector are addressed effectively.
The Committee will continue to monitor measures being taken by the Ministry to resolve land disputes and strengthen the management of the land sector in the country.
