Kizimkazi residents strike gold in the 2.4m- litres capacity water project

ZANZIBAR: THE Minister for Water Jumaa Aweso has said the new Kizimkazi water source has the capacity to produce up to 2.4 million litres of water per day, against the area’s estimated daily demand of 500,000 litres.

Speaking today, August 13, 2026, during the launch of various development projects in Kizimkazi, Zanzibar, Aweso said the initiative was part of efforts by the Union Government, in collaboration with the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar, to ensure residents have reliable and accessible water services.

He said the project was also aimed at advancing the government’s ‘kumtua ndoo mama kichwani’ initiative, which seeks to reduce the burden on women who spend significant time fetching and carrying water, enabling them to devote more time to other productive and development activities.

Aweso said the availability of adequate and reliable water would improve the living standards of residents and contribute to increased economic activities in Kizimkazi.

The minister said the project demonstrates the government’s continued commitment to expanding water infrastructure and improving access to essential services for communities across the country.
