Fast-track food trader registration, councils told

SINGIDA: THE Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS) has called on councils in Singida Region to accelerate the registration of food business activities, including small-scale vendors and producers of unpackaged foods.

The move is aimed at strengthening food safety and boosting revenue collection by local government authorities.

The directive was issued recently during the second review meeting on the implementation of collaboration between TBS and the Prime Minister’s Office–Regional Administration and Local Government (PMO-RALG), held at the Singida Regional Conference Hall.

The meeting was officiated by the Acting Regional Administrative Secretary, Mr Boaz Kajigili, who underscored the need for close cooperation among government institutions to ensure food business operations comply with established standards and regulations.

“Government institutions must work closely to ensure food businesses are managed in accordance with set standards and procedures,” Mr Kajigili said.

Mr Kajigili said the collaboration should deliver tangible results, particularly in improving food safety, enhancing service delivery to the public and increasing revenue collection by local government authorities.

The session brought together Regional and Council Trade Officers, the Regional Medical Officer, Health Officers, as well as coordinators from TBS Singida Region and the Central Zone.

It aimed to review the collaboration guidelines between TBS and Local Government Authorities and assess the progress of registering food-related businesses during the 2025/2026 financial year.
