TRA moves to plug revenue leaks at Mkoani Port

DAR ES SALAAM: THE Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) is set to install a cargo scanner at Mkoani Port in Pemba to strengthen customs control, curb smuggling and seal revenue leakages linked to undeclared and prohibited goods.

TRA Commissioner General, Mr Yusuph Juma Mwenda, said the scanner will enhance inspection of cargo entering through the port, enabling the authority to detect goods that evade customs duties and block prohibited imports.

“The scanner to be installed here will help control smuggled goods that have been evading taxes and depriving the government of revenue. It will also prevent prohibited goods that could harm citizens from entering the country,” Mr Mwenda said during a visit to Pemba.

He said the investment forms part of TRA’s broader efforts to improve service delivery while ensuring that all eligible taxpayers pay the correct amount of tax.

Mr Mwenda noted that stronger tax collection is vital, as increased revenue supports implementation of development projects that benefit citizens.

The move comes as TRA advances plans to construct a bonded warehouse at Mkoani, which he said would further improve cargo handling and security at the port.

The facility is expected to strengthen customs operations by providing a secure holding area for goods under customs control before clearance.

Mkoani Port Customs Station Supervisor, Mr Abdallah Salim Abdallah, said the warehouse would improve service delivery while contributing to increased government revenue.

He said the port, the second-largest in Pemba, receives large cargo vessels from various destinations, making it a key gateway for trade and economic activity on the island.

“The planned scanner and bonded warehouse will strengthen customs enforcement while enabling more efficient cargo handling,” he said.

Meanwhile, South Pemba Regional Commissioner, Mr Rashid Hadidi Rashid, said the region has recorded notable development in recent years due to taxes paid by citizens.

Speaking after receiving Mr Mwenda at his office, Mr Rashid cited improvements in road infrastructure, education and health services as among visible gains from increased tax compliance.

He said better social services have also attracted more investors to Pemba, further boosting government revenue.

“The major development taking place in South Pemba is a result of taxes paid by citizens for their own development,” Mr Rashid said.

He added that the regional government will continue working with TRA to raise awareness on tax compliance and sustain development efforts.
