Zanzibar, China partner on health research
ZANZIBAR: ZANZIBAR is strengthening its health research capacity through a new partnership with a Chinese medical university aimed at generating scientific evidence to improve healthcare services and address emerging health challenges.
The Zanzibar Health Research Institute (ZAHRI), under the Ministry of Health, has signed a cooperation agreement with Ningning Medical University in China to promote research, professional exchanges and technology transfer.
Speaking after the signing ceremony, the Ministry of Health Principal Secretary, Dr Mngereza Mzee Miraji, said the agreement reflects the government’s commitment to strengthening the health sector through research that provides practical solutions to societal challenges.
He said the partnership will focus on three key areas, including collaboration between the Ministry, ZAHRI and the university to conduct research that informs policy and planning. The second area targets research on diseases and emerging health challenges to identify effective control measures and reduce their impact on communities. The third focuses on reducing maternal and child mortality.

“The government has continued to invest in maternal, child health and nutrition services because they are fundamental to building a healthier population,” Dr Miraji said.
He added that Zanzibar will continue collaborating with local and international institutions to benefit from advances in science, technology and innovation in healthcare.
The partnership will also offer opportunities for Zanzibar’s health professionals and researchers to receive specialised training, exchange expertise and participate in joint research projects. Dr Miraji said such initiatives will strengthen professional capacity and improve the quality of healthcare services.
ZAHRI Director General, Dr Mayasa Salum Ali, described the agreement as a major milestone and a foundation for broader cooperation in health research. She said ZAHRI will work closely with Ningning Medical University on studies addressing key health challenges, particularly those with significant impact on the population.
